Dress Blues...Refinished Cabinets with Faux Silk Backs

Navy blue and “dress blues” … this name originated from the uniforms of the British Royal Navy. It is still used for other first class distinctions representing dependability, sophistication, excellence and even corporate stature. Deep blues remain popular and are always on trend because they adjust to all styles and are easily paired with just about any color.

The design process:

The client wanted to create a warm and intimate feeling in this sitting room. Interior designer, Michelle Nettles of MJN & Associates knew how to create the “jewel box treatment” for this small space. She selected a rich hue of navy blue as a “neutral”. She explained, “Deep blue is more soothing than the obvious black or dark brown. The goal was to create a cozy but elegant setting coupled with warm gold accents and a dynamic punch of her favorite color … magenta.”

Careful consideration was given to the balance of color. Once the fabrics and furnishings were selected, we turned our attention to the large architectural elements on the feature wall. The cabinets were refinished and painted in blue then softened with a subtle glaze. A faux finish reminiscent of silk or grass cloth was incorporated on the back of the cabinets. The graceful metallic high lights compliment the warm tones of the mantel and the soft gold accessories.

The result is an elegant focal wall with architectural details adorned in stately “dress blues”.
