Creative Transitions... custom stains on a floor
The renovation of this vintage kitchen was an opportunity for a creative option. The space was small with low ceilings. It needed a design element that would make it appear larger and offer a high design solution. It also required pattern and color that would relate to the floors in the adjoining spaces. Each one was a different stain color.

The Design Process:
Over the years, new hardwood floors had been installed in the spaces adjacent to the kitchen. None of these floors were the same color. so this is the point where they all merged together. The solution was to create a pattern that would be interesting and visually compatible from all vantage points.

We chose a classic and timeless design ... diamonds. Beginning with raw wood floors, five stain colors were mixed to blend with the colors of wood flooring in the adjoining rooms. Stain was used rather than paint which allowed the beauty of the natural wood grain to remain. Once we determined the correct scale of the diamonds, each one was stained individually. The result... this floor became the perfect intersection of 4 different wood floors. With only 8 feet high ceilings, the kitchen floor produced an interesting transition point that draws your attention downward making the ceiling feel higher.
