Sprucing up a high mantel can be a fun yet challenging adventure, particularly when you’re striving for a captivating centerpiece in a space. The goal was to update the traditional architecture and create an artistic finish with a sleek but elegant design. But they wanted more than the usual solid decorative finish. They wanted something unexpected and artistic that would lean toward a more transitional style.

The Design Process:

Stripes are one of the most flexible and visually impactful patterns in interior design. When utilized to their full potential, stripes offer endless possibilities for transforming a room. They have a unique way of adding energy and sophistication to any space.

A whole wall of consistent stripes would have been overwhelming on this vast mantel. For an unexpected twist, we decided on a process known as “Stripe Stacking”. This incorporates multiple styles of stripes on a single surface which adds a dimensional look to this mantel. The key to creating a contrasting stripes is choosing patterns that have both differences and similarities.

This artistic finish started with 3 perfectly measured bold crisp stripes that provide interest by dividing the wall into 5 equal sections. In between, it was juxtaposed with a series of thin irregular lines. The rich metallic champagne color becomes the unifying element. The pairing of these 2 types of stripes gives a structured and organic feel that still honors their sophisticated traditional style.
